New legislation (Pt 9.1A of the Corporations Act 2001) has commenced, requiring new and existing directors to obtain a Director Identification Number (DIN). A DIN is a unique number for each director, similar to a Tax File Number(TFN).

The purpose of a DIN is to track director relationships across companies. There is now a transition period until 30 November 2022, by which time all directors must obtain a DIN. Note that directors of indigenous corporations will have a further 12 months.

As the new requirements are rolled out, I expect a DIN application will accompany a company setup if an officeholder is a first-time director. ASIC will notify existing directors in due course of the DIN application process.
